Composed by Adi Shankaracharya, "Shree Krishnashtkam" (Śrī kṛṣṇāṣṭakam/ श्रीकृष्णाष्टकम् ) beautifully encapsulates the divine qualities and exploits of Krishna, highlighting His enchanting form, benevolent actions, and bliss He bestows upon His devotees. The verses not only celebrate Krishna's essence but also invoke blessings for all who engage in its recitation or chant, promising a path to spiritual fulfilment and divine connection.
भजे व्रजैकमण्डनं समस्तपापखण्डनं
स्वभक्तचित्तरंजनं सदैव नन्दनन्दनम् |
सुपिच्छगुच्छमस्तकं सुनादवेणुहस्तकं
अनंगरंगसागरं नमामि कृष्णनागरम् || १ ||
Bhaje vrajaika-maṇḍanaṁ samasta-pāpa-khandaṇaṁ
Svabhakta-chitta-ranjanaṁ sadaiva nandanandanaṁ |
Supiccha-gucchamastakaṁ sunāda-veṇu-hastakaṁ
Ananga-raṅga-sāgaraṁ namāmi kṛiṣṇa-nāgaram || 1 ||
व्रज-भूमिके एकमात्र आभूषण, समस्त पापोंको नष्ट करनेवाले तथा अपने भक्तोंके चित्तोंको आनन्दित करनेवाले नन्दनन्दनको सर्वदा भजता हूँ, जिनके मस्तकपर मनोहर मोर-पंखका मुकुट है, हाथोंमें सुरीली बाँसुरी है तथा जो काम-कलाके सागर हैं, उन नटनागर श्रीकृष्णचन्द्रको नमस्कार करता हूँ।
I always worship Nandanandan, the divine jewel of the land of Vraj, who eradicates all sins and fills the hearts of His devotees with joy. He who wears a beautiful peacock feather crown on His head holds a melodious flute in His hands and is the ocean of the art of love—salutations to that dancing lord, Shree Krishna Chandra, the supreme being.
मनोजगर्वमोचनं विशाललोललोचनं
विधूतगोपशोचनं नमामि पद्मलोचनम् |
करारविन्दभूधरं स्मितावलोकसुन्दरं
महेन्द्रमानदारणं नमामि कृष्णावारणम् || २ ||
Manoja-garva-mochanaṁ viśāla-lola-lochanaṁ
Vidhūta-gopa-śochanaṁ namāmi padma-lochanam |
Karāra-vinda-bhūdharaṁ smitāva-loka-sundaraṁ
Mahendra-māna-dāraṇaṁ namāmi kṛiṣṇā-vāraṇam || 2 ||
कामदेवका मान मर्दन करनेवाले, बड़े-बड़े सुन्दर नेत्रोंवाले तथा व्रजगोपोंका शोक हरनेवाले कमलनयन भगवान्को नमस्कार करता हूँ, जिन्होंने अपने करकमलोंपर गिरिराजको धारण किया था तथा जिनकी मुसकान और चितवन अति मनोहर है, देवराज इन्द्रका मान मर्दन करनेवाले उन श्रीकृष्णरूपी गजराजको नमस्कार करता हूँ।
I bow to Krishna, whose expansive, playful eyes eclipse even the god of love, Kamdev. He dissipates the sorrows of the cowherd boys, the Gopas, with His lotus-like gaze. His lotus-like hands effortlessly lifted Govardhan Hill, and His captivating smile and glance humbled the pride of the king of gods, Indra. I offer my salutations to Krishna, the conqueror of Indra.
कदम्बसूनकुण्डलं सुचारुगण्डमण्डलं
व्रजांगनैकवल्लभं नमामि कृष्णदुर्लभम् |
यशोदया समोदया सगोपया सनन्दया
युतं सुखैकदायकं नमामि गोपनायकम् || ३ ||
Kadamba-sūna-kuṇḍalaṁ suchāru-ghaṇḍa-maṇḍalaṁ
Vrajāṅga-naika-vallabhaṁ namāmi kṛiṣṇa-durlabham |
Yaśodayā samodayā sagopayā sanandayā
Yutaṁ sukhaika-dāyakaṁ namāmi gopa-nāyakam || 3 ||
जिनके कानोंमें कदम्ब-पुष्पोंके कुण्डल हैं, परम सुन्दर कपोल हैं तथा व्रजबालाओंके जो एकमात्र प्राणाधार हैं, उन दुर्लभ कृष्णचन्द्रको नमस्कार करता हूँ; जो गोपगण और नन्दजीके सहित अतिप्रसन्ना यशोदाजीसे युक्त हैं और एकमात्र आनन्ददायक हैं, उन गोपनायक गोपालको नमस्कार करता हूँ।
I bow to Krishna, adorned with earrings of Kadamba flowers, whose cheeks are radiant and captivating, the beloved of the Gopis of Vraj. To that rare Krishna, I offer my salutations. I bow to the leader of the Gopas, ever by Yashoda's side, filled with joy, surrounded by cowherd boys and Nanda, the sole giver of bliss.
सदैव पादपंकजं मदीय मानसे निजं
दधानमुक्तमालकं नमामि नन्दबालकम् |
समस्तदोषशोषणं समस्तलोकपोषणं
समस्तगोपमानसं नमामि नन्दलालसम् || ४ ||
Sadaiva pāda-pankajaṁ madīya mānase nijaṁ
Dadhāna-mukta-mālaṁ namāmi nanda-bālakam |
Samasta-doṣa-śoṣaṇaṁ samasta-lokapoṣaṇaṁ
Samasta-gopa-mānaṁ namāmi nanda-lālasam || 4 ||
जिन्होंने अपने चरण- कमलोंको मेरे मनरूपी सरोवरमें स्थापित कर रखा है, उन अति सुन्दर अलकोंवाले नन्दकुमारको नमस्कार करता हूँ तथा समस्त दोषोंको दूर करनेवाले समस्त लोकोंका पालन करनेवाले और समस्त व्रजगोपोंके हृदय तथा नन्दजीकी लालसारूप श्रीकृष्णचन्द्रको नमस्कार करता हूँ।
I bow to the child of Nanda, whose lotus feet I forever cherish in my heart, adorned with a garland of Vaijayanti. To Nanda's beloved child, I offer my salutations. I bow to Nandalal, who eradicates all flaws, nourishes the entire universe, and resides in the hearts of all the Gopas.
भुवो भरावतारकं भवाब्धिकर्णधारकं
यशोमतीकिशोरकं नमामि चित्तचोरकम् |
दृगन्तकान्तभंगिनं सदा सदालिसंगिनं
दिने दिने नवं नवं नमामि नन्दसम्भवम् || ५ ||
Bhuvo bharāvatārakaṁ bhavābdhi-karna-dhārakaṁ
Yaśomatī kishorakaṁ namāmi chittachorakam |
Dṛganta-kānta bhaṅginaṁ sadā sadāli-sanginaṁ
Dine dine navaṁ navaṁ namāmi nanda-saṁbhavam || 5 ||
भूमिका भार उतारनेवाले संसारसागरके कर्णधार मनोहर यशोदाकुमारको नमस्कार करता हूँ; अति कमनीय कटाक्षवाले, सदैव सुन्दर भूषण धारण करनेवाले नित्य नूतन नन्दकुमारको नमस्कार करता हूँ।
I bow to the charming Yashoda Kumar, who lightens the burden of the earth and holds the ocean of existence in His palm. I offer my salutations to the ever-fresh Nand Kumar, who has beautiful, captivating glances and always surrounds Himself with His beloved companions.
गुणाकरं सुखाकरं कृपाकरं कृपापरं
सुरद्विषन्निकन्दनं नमामि गोपनन्दनम् |
नवीनगोपनागरं नवीनकेलिलम्पटं
नमामि मेघसुन्दरं तडित्प्रभालसत्पटम् || ६ ||
Guṇākaraṁ sukhākaraṁ kṛpākaraṁ kṛpāparaṁ
Sura-dviṣanni-kaṁdanaṁ namāmi gopa-nandanaṁ |
Navīna-gopa-nāgaraṁ navīna-keḷi-laṁpaṭaṁ
Namāmi megha-sundaraṁ taḍitpra-bhāla-satpaṭam || 6 ||
गुणोंके भण्डार, सुखसागर, कृपानिधान और कृपालु गोपालको, जो देव शत्रुओंको ध्वंस करनेवाले हैं, नमस्कार करता हूँ; नित्य नूतन लीलाविहारी, मेघश्याम नटनागर गोपालको, जो बिजलीकी-सी आभावाला अति सुन्दर पीताम्बर धारण किये हुए हैं, नमस्कार करता हूँ।
I bow to Gopal, the divine treasure of virtues, the ocean of boundless happiness, the abode of infinite grace, and the compassionate one, who vanquishes the enemies of the gods with a single glance. I bow to the ever-fresh performer of divine pastimes, Gopal, whose complexion is as captivating as a dark cloud and who wears a brilliant yellow garment that shines like a bolt of lightning, illuminating the universe with His divine presence.
समस्तगोपनन्दनं हृदम्बुजैकमोदनं
नमामि कुंजमध्यगं प्रसन्नभानुशोभनम् |
निकामकामदायकं दृगन्तचारुसायकं
रसालवेणुगायकं नमामि कुंजनायकम् || ७ ||
Samasta-gopa-nandanaṁ hṛdam-bujaika-modanaṁ
Namāmi kunja-madhyagaṁ prasanna-bhānu-śobhanam |
Nikāma-kāma-dāyakaṁ dṛganta-chāru-sāyakaṁ
Rasāla-veṇu-gāyakaṁ namāmi kunja-nāyakam || 7 ||
जो समस्त गोपोंको आनन्दित करनेवाले और हृदयकमलको विकसित करनेवाले, देदीप्यमान सूर्यके समान शोभायमान हैं, उन कुंजमध्यवर्ती श्यामसुन्दरको नमस्कार करता हूँ। जो कामनाओंको भलीभाँति पूर्ण करनेवाले हैं, जिनकी चारु चितवन बाणोंके समान है, सुमधुर वेणु बजाकर गान करनेवाले उन कुंजनायकको नमस्कार करता हूँ।
I bow to Shyam Sundar, who delights all the Gopis. He who resides in the grove nourishes everyone's souls just as the sun's presence causes the lotus to bloom. I bow to the divine being who fulfils the desires of His devotees, whose graceful glances destroy sorrows, and who plays the most enchanting melodies on His flute, captivating the hearts of all with His divine presence.
विदग्धगोपिकामनोमनोज्ञतल्पशायिनं
नमामि कुंजकानने प्रव्रद्धवन्हिपायिनम् |
किशोरकान्तिरंजितं दृअगंजनं सुशोभितं
गजेन्द्रमोक्षकारिणं नमामि श्रीविहारिणम् || ८ ||
Vidagdha-gopikā-mano-mano-jñatalpa-śāyiṇaṁ
Namāmi kunja-kānane pravṛddha-vaṁhi-pāyinam |
Kiśora-kānti-rañjitaṁ dṛgajan̄janaṁ suśobhitaṁ
Gajendra-mokṣa-kāriṇaṁ namāmi śrī-vihāri-ṇam || 8 ||
चतुर गोपिकाओंके मनरूपी सुकोमल शय्यापर शयन करनेवाले तथा कुंजवनमें बढ़ती हुई दावाग्निको पान कर जानेवाले, किशोरावस्थाकी कान्तिसे सुशोभित अंजनयुक्त सुन्दर नेत्रोंवाले, गजेन्द्रको ग्राहसे मुक्त करनेवाले, श्रीजीके साथ विहार करनेवाले श्रीकृष्णचन्द्रको नमस्कार करता हूँ।
I bow to Shree Krishna Chandra, who rests on the soft bed of the hearts of the clever Gopis and who drinks the fire of the forest to protect the Gopas. He is adorned with the brilliance of youth and has beautiful eyes enhanced with kohl. I bow to Him who liberated Gajendra from the grasp of the crocodile and who is the Lord and master of Shree Lakshmi.
यदा तदा यथा तथा तथैव कृष्णसत्कथा
मया सदैव गीयतां तथा कृपा विधीयताम् |
प्रमाणिकाष्टकद्वयं जपत्यधीत्य यः पुमान
भवेत्स नन्दनन्दने भवे भवे सुभक्तिमान || ९ ||
Yadā tadā yathā tathā tathaiva kṛiṣṇa-satkathā
Mayā sadaiva gīyatāṁ tathā kṛpā vidhīyatām |
Pramāṇi-kāṣṭaka-dvayaṁ japatya-dhītya yaḥ pumān
Bhavetsa nandanandane bhave bhave subhaktimān || 9 ||
प्रभो ! मेरे ऊपर ऐसी कृपा हो कि जब-तब जैसी भी परिस्थितिमें रहूँ, सदा आपकी सत्कथाओंका गान करूँ। जो पुरुष इन दोनों प्रामाणिक अष्टकोंका पाठ या जप करेगा वह जन्म-जन्ममें नन्दनन्दन श्यामसुन्दरकी भक्तिसे युक्त होगा।
O Lord! May I receive such grace that in any circumstance, I may always sing your glories. Those who recite or chant these two authentic Ashtaksharas will be endowed with the devotion of Nandanandan Shyam Sundar for many lifetimes.
