Gita 12.15
यस्मान्नोद्विजते लोको लोकान्नोद्विजते च य: |
हर्षामर्षभयोद्वेगैर्मुक्तो य: स च मे प्रिय: || 15||

yasmān nodvijate loko lokān nodvijate cha yaḥ
harṣhāmarṣha-bhayodvegair mukto yaḥ sa cha me priyaḥ
The essence of the soul is inherently pure and uncontaminated. Its true nature remains untouched by any impurity or flaw. The challenge lies in the fact that, in our current state, the soul is veiled by the impure mind—clouded by desires, attachments, and mental disturbances. However, once these impurities are systematically removed through disciplined spiritual practice, self-awareness, and devotion, the true luminous qualities of the soul automatically emerge and shine forth in their full glory.

The Shreemad Bhagavatam eloquently explains this concept:
"yasyāsti bhaktir bhagavatyakiñchanā
sarvair guṇais tatra samāsate surāḥ
harāvabhaktasya kuto mahad-guṇā
manorathenāsati dhāvato bahiḥ"
(5.18.12)
This translates to:

"All the divine qualities of the celestial gods manifest in those who are devoted to the Supreme Lord. Conversely, those who do not engage in loving devotion only chase after fleeting mental desires, running on the chariot of their restless mind."

Here, Shree Krishna emphasizes that genuine devotion opens the door for divine virtues to flourish within us. These qualities—such as compassion, humility, patience, and joy—are inherent in the soul but require the right spiritual conditions to be expressed fully.

Devotion Leads to Natural Gentleness and Compassion

A truly devoted soul is never a source of annoyance or trouble to others. Devotion dissolves the ego and softens the heart, fostering kindness and understanding in dealings with everyone. Such devotees see the divine presence in every living being—recognizing that all are fragments of the divine essence. This vision cultivates a sense of universal brotherhood and prevents them from harboring harmful thoughts or intentions. Their interactions are characterized by gentleness, patience, and a sincere desire to serve others without expecting anything in return.

They Remain Calm and Unshaken

Despite facing opposition or hostility from others—perhaps out of misunderstanding or fear—devotees do not retaliate or succumb to anger. Their unwavering faith and internal strength enable them to remain calm and composed. History is replete with stories of saints and spiritual figures who endured persecution yet maintained a forgiving and compassionate attitude. For example, Jesus of Nazareth, while being crucified, prayed, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34). Such examples demonstrate that true devotion fosters resilience and a forgiving nature, even in the face of adversity.

Equanimity in Pleasure and Pain

Devotees cultivate a wisdom rooted in sacred scriptures, understanding that life's dualities—pleasure and pain—are natural and inevitable, much like the changing seasons of summer and winter. Recognizing the transient nature of worldly experiences, they do not cling to pleasure nor despair in pain. Instead, they see each experience as an opportunity to deepen their connection with the divine. By perceiving divine grace in all circumstances, they maintain an unwavering positive attitude, transforming challenges into spiritual growth and offerings of love and devotion.

Freedom from Fear and Anxiety

The root cause of fear and anxiety is attachment—our tendency to cling to material possessions, relationships, or transient outcomes. When we become overly attached, we become vulnerable to the pains of loss and separation. Conversely, when we cultivate detachment and surrender to the divine will, we transcend these fears. Devotees align their lives with God's plan, trusting that everything unfolds according to divine wisdom. This surrender brings about inner peace, eradicating fears of loss, failure, or death. As a result, they live with a sense of calm confidence and unwavering trust in the divine arrangement of life.
